Among the rugged landscapes of the Stelvio National Park, the remains of fortifications, trenches, observatories, positions, barracks, military villages, traces of the high-altitude fighting of the Great War on the Austro-Italian front have been restored, enhanced and included in a widespread park-museum, a set of itineraries that evoke the memory of the conflict with sublime scenarios full of memorial value.
The design adopted an approach of great simplicity, respecting the integrity of the places and their history. The main route connects Alta Val Camonica to Alta Valtellina, through nine main routes that extend for approximately 72 km. Each itinerary has been designed to facilitate the visit and understanding of war artefacts of great historical and landscape interest.
Conservation interventions have aimed to preserve existing structures by slowing down degenerative processes: the restoration of mule tracks, the strengthening of the walls of barracks and trenches, and the restoration of access routes to military villages to highlight their original organization.
A distinctive element of the project are the information panels made of andesite and decorated with ceramic enamels. These panels, of two different sizes and supported by stainless steel structures or set directly into the rocks, offer visitors insights into the historical context, the construction techniques, the armament of the time and the structure of the villages. In addition, historical period photographs shown on the panels allow visitors to visually immerse themselves in the highlights of the conflict, reliving the events with participation and awe.
This project not only pays homage to history, but also emphasizes the importance of collective memory and landscape respect, leaving a lasting impression on its visitors.
