Trento’s purifier it is an innovative model of purification system. It has been designed to respond to the increasing demands of environmental sustainability and efficient management of water resources. It is a unique action, that wants to integrate a great structure such as a purifier in the sensible context of Alto Adige.
The purifier is a large urban infrastructure that provides clean water for the city of Trento and a large part of the Province. Innovative solutions both in the field of purification and energy sustainability have been adopted and it is developed entirely underground. engineering challenges such as the protection of the upstream slope, the relocation of the Brenner State Road, and the crossing of the Brenner railway were challenges needed to be solved.
The design involves a multidisciplinary holistic approach respecting the essential forms of the landscape, both natural and anthropic, collected by analysing the orographic, naturalistic and agricultural dimensions of the environment; the perceptual qualities of the site and its environmental prerogatives were the pillars of the design.
The intervention is divided into two main components:
The purification system, it’s 700 meters long, large, underground structure with a green roof completed by earthworks, including reinforced earth, which perfectly blends the mountain slope and its vegetation. This design allows to recreate a natural transition between the mountain and the the valley. To guarantee continuity with the front of the mountain, at high altitude, it was treated with oxidation of the rock, hydroseeding and creation of vegetated “ledges”.
The lifting station, is buried and hidden, in the middle of the valley near the bank of the Adige, under an artificial hill, built with hanging gardens techniques and fully integrated into the agricultural context. The top of the hill is characterized by rows of vines, while the base is covered by a small riparian forest, offering a natural raised appearance.
All works were carried out using local excavation materials and reusing the pre-existing vegetation.
