Urban Gardens of Messina

The project for transforming the shacks settlements in the city of Messina aims at a radical regeneration of these areas, in order to reinvent them as usable public spaces integrated into the urban fabric. This ambitious initiative goes beyond the simple demolition of precarious structures; it represents a true mission of social and urban rebirth, which includes the research and prior allocation of decent housing for the resident communities.

The action plan involves a meticulous dismantling of the existing physical barriers and the harmonious integration of new structures with the surrounding environment. The main purpouse is to eliminate architectural obsolescence while enhancing the existing landscape, improving the quality of urban services in line with municipal and territorial goals.

The project includes transforming unused spaces into public green areas, following the principles of sustainable urban development. This transformation will provide the local community with new meeting and recreational spaces and also help mitigate the urban heat island effect, manage rainwater, and promote biodiversity. Elements such as rain gardens, phytodepuration areas, and the planting of native species are essential to achieve these goals.

For Messina, this project is a great step towards the renewal of the city. It marks the transition from a demoted situation to a model of more pleasant, green and sustainable, for the well-being of its inhabitants.
