The project covers a total area of 650,000 m2 corresponding to over half of the former disused infrastructure of Dal Molin Airport. The large size and specific characteristics of the park make it a candidate to become a metropolitan park, an attractive center on a
territorial scale.
This work of urban and landscape transformation is not only an attempt to reconquer nature where water and vegetation are undisputed protagonists, but also has the ambition of being a new fulcrum of the green system of the city of Vicenza, acting as a conjunction between the historic city, the adjacent municipalities and an even larger territorial area. ).
The project is part of the territorial urban planning context of Veneto and is characterized as a major intervention to enhance, promote and safeguard the territory and its ecological mosaic, it is characterized by wetlands, hygrophilous and lowland groves, rows and hedges, wild meadows, vegetable gardens. In this sense, the project is conceived with a view to a Green Infrastructure, strong in its territorial interconnections.
As a green infrastructure, calculated engineering, the new park will be able to deliver ecosystem services at 360°, and thanks to the integration of innovative solutions such as SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) and the so-called Nature Based Solutions (NBS) it will contribute in mitigating the deleterious effects of climate change and promote environmental sustainability.
From a technical-engineering point of view, starting from a perfectly flat area, a movement of 240,000 m³ of land was carried out with relative reuse in order to create a new great variety of landscapes and places: canals, basins, urban forestation interventions that create new woods, vast prairies, play areas and areas dedicated to sport, urban gardens and spaces spaces dedicated to events and culture and teaching through the preparation of information panels and signs to explain the ecological value of the park.
The park was designed as a large rolling pond, capable of slowly containing and releasing up to 100,000 cubic meters of water. The efficient management of water resources, combined with theestablishment of new wet ecosystems, goes beyond simple urban drainage: in fact, it creates new vital spaces for rich biodiversity, animal and plant. In fact, thanks to this dense network of water, the local fauna has had the opportunity to quickly repopulate the area, which has been enriched not only with birds linked to the aquatic environment, but also with other bird species, amphibians, fish, molluscs, arthropod insects and small mammals.
Finally, the project paid particular attention to fully preserving the pre-existing structures, also enhancing the historical dimension of the site and the reuse of the existing one by promoting a sustainable approach linked to the life cycle of the artefacts. At the main entrance of the Park, in the area called “East Gate”, the recovery and transformation of the former airport hangars into spaces dedicated to culture, associations and leisure was carried out.
